John Spears – Co-Founder

John has been a leader in the development of high performance buildings and renewable energy systems and policy since the early 1970’s. He specializes in the design of buildings and communities that are self sufficient in energy, water and waste management and are constructed with local, natural materials. His integrated systems approach to design also embraces economic development and social equity in the planning of sustainable communities. He has won numerous awards for his work and was named Environmental Professional of the Year by the Association of Energy Engineers.

John is President, Sustainable Design Group a design build firm specializing in Net-Zero residential homes and President, CEO, International Center for Sustainable Development whose mission is to apply sustainable principles to development projects around the world in order to impact world development through practical projects that meet local needs and that are: community focused, environmentally friendly, financially healthy, and replicable.


Makarand V. Dehejia – Co-Founder

Makarand V. (“Mak”) DEHEJIA, a former Vice President of the World Bank Group in Washington D.C., has for the 45 years worked extensively in the area of global business and international trade in a wide variety of industrial sectors in more than 45 countries.

During his long tenure at IFC, Mak Dehejia was directly involved in the search, evaluation and selection of technologies for projects in developing countries. Being responsible also for the supervision of project construction, Mak became acutely aware of the common pitfalls encountered in doing business in emerging economies. His long experience in this field makes him an ideal interpreter of technology and technological issues in global finance and trade matters.

Mak is currently President and CEO of the ALLIANCE FOR SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRY & ENERGY, LLC. He continues to advise investors seeking to promote business in emerging markets. He was a member of the secretariat of the Task Force on Multilateral Development Banks established by the G-7 countries to define a clearer role for the private sector in economic development. He is a founding member of the INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR INDUSTRIAL ECOLOGY at Yale University, New Haven, CT., serves as the Book Review Editor for the Journal of Industrial Ecology and serves on the Board of the International Center for Sustainable Development.


Rick Whittemore – Co-Founder

Rick has more than 20 years of experience in information technology and product management for both Fortune 500 companies and start-ups. As a senior product and project executive, he has successfully managed the full life-cycle of several large information technology systems in financial services, media and state government. As an entrepreneur, he was co-founder of Cinea, Inc, acquired by Dolby Laboratories in 2004.  Rick brings a diverse set of experience to Sustainable Systems International.
